Eight people died, including the pilot and the co-pilot, when the private plane in which they were traveling crashed on Sunday in a building in the town of San Donato, on the outskirts of Milan, which caught fire after the impact while empty, the fire department confirmed.
The Piper tourist plane crashed near the San Donato station of Milan metro line 3 at 13:09 local time (11:09 GMT) and the pilot, the co-pilot and the six passengers, including a child, were killed instantly.
The identity of the victims has not yet been revealed.
The causes why the plane bound for Olbia, on the island of Sardinia, crashed after taking off from Milan Linate airport are under investigation.
In the meantime, the building was destroyed after the impact and the flames were extinguished after the firefighters intervened.
“The glass in my windows shook,” Giuseppe, a 26-year-old who lives near the crash site, told Italian news agency AGI, according to the agency. AFP.
“I opened the window and, like in the movies, I saw a big column of smoke rising, and I called for help,” he added.
The Italian National Aviation Safety Agency has opened an investigation.
