Brazil exceeded 600,000 deaths from covid-19 on Friday since the start of the pandemic, a tragic mark that had so far only been surpassed by the United States, which is accumulating more than 700,000, according to data compiled by a press consortium with health authorities.
The latest official report shows a total of 600,425 deaths and 21,550,730 cases, figures very underestimated, according to specialists.
Although the pandemic has Slowly slowed since June, figures confirm that Brazil, with some 213 million inhabitants, is the second country with the most deaths, behind the United States, and the third with the most cases of the disease, after the United States and India.
Since the confirmation of the first case, which was also the first in Latin America, in February 2020, Brazil also has more than 21.5 million positive for the coronavirus.
The Latin American giant records, without counting all the data for the day, a total of 600,077 deaths, according to the consortium created last year, which directly collects data on deaths and infections in collaboration with the health secretariats of the 27 states of the country.
However, despite the health disaster, the death and infection curve has been declining since last June, after the country went through a deadly and virulent second wave in the first months of 2021.
This, according to experts and health authorities, is due to the progress of the vaccination campaign, which began on January 17 across the country. According to official data, the 70% of the Brazilian population has already suffered the first injection against covid-19, while 45.5% already have the full directive.
The acceleration of vaccination has enabled the average number of daily deaths is now around 440, well below the average of 3,124 deaths recorded last April, at the top of the second wave.
Likewise, the average number of daily cases is approximately 15,000, far from the record of 77,228 new cases per day reached in June, while the transmission of the coronavirus was in full swing.
The management of the pandemic in Brazil has been marked by the denial of President Jair Bolsonaro, which downplays the severity of the virus, has systematically questioned the efficacy of vaccines and the mask and promoted drugs of zero efficacy against covid-19.
For all that, your government is the subject of an investigation by a parliamentary committee that, in his final report, he plans to accuse the Head of State and some fifty authorities and people close to the Executive of various and serious crimes against health.
