The father of one of the Argentines wanted in the Caribbean explained why he does not believe they were wrecked: “The ship must float”.

Renzo Spasiano He is Argentinian, he is 20 years old and he is one of the four crew members on board the yacht which, last Tuesday, September 28, while returning from a humanitarian mission in Haiti, lost all kinds of contacts. in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. and never arrived at its destination. .

The young man’s father, Luis Spasiano – who moved to Puerto Aventuras, Mexico with his wife Liliana and son Renzo about eight months ago – gave details this morning about the intense search for his most young son and the three men who accompanied him. him: the Argentinian Carlos Eduardo Juárez, 45, owner of the boat, the Mexican Martin Vega Argáez, 44 years old, and the Cuban Denis Manuel Fernandez Diaz, from 46.

The yacht MOI Guadalupe – of Panamanian flag but based in Mexico – in which the four men were traveling was due to arrive at the port of Cozumel on the morning of Wednesday, September 29, but Tuesday, about 200 kilometers before his destination, he stopped reporting.

Spasiano recounted how the last communication with his son went and the latest information he had about him: “The last one I heard is from the ship. I spoke when I was in the port of Jamaica refueling diesel, food, water. Some things they needed because they had been in the port of Haiti for a week and had absolutely nothing, ”he said.

“Everything is cut on the ship,” Luis explained in statements to Radio La Rouge. “Only the satellite works and a spot, a little bigger than a cell phone, which sends a signal every 20 minutes and gives the exact position of the ship.. They left Haiti, bound for Mexico, they had to make a port in Cozumel to signal their entry. They had traveled normally, the positioner was marking the route, they had 120 miles to go, about 220 kilometers, they were already arriving, they had sailed for two days. The positioner gave his last signal, those following him started calling the satellite and gave the dial tone but they did not answer. It’s the only thing we know ”.

Luis, who 10 days ago had desperately requested the help of the Mexican embassy and authorities to activate the search, thanked the support of the Argentinian consul in Playa del Carmen, Lautaro Filchtinsky, of the consul general, Gabriela Quinteros and of the Argentine Ambassador to Mexico, Carlos Pris. “I have daily contact with them,” he explained. “Thanks to the embassy and the consulate, they are now preparing the departure of the Navy plane. They are following a search and rescue protocol and were on passive search. I am amazed and grateful. “

Spasiano, who is a naval engineer, flew over the ship’s search area several times on private flights paid for by the yacht company run by Juárez and for which Renzo worked. In his opinion, the climatic conditions and the area in which the loss of contact with the boat occurred, do not give a priori the impression of having been shipwrecked.

“They were near Cozumel, which is a totally touristy island. There is nothing else”, Luis indicated. “They had all the appropriate systems, because the harbor master’s office at the port of Cozumel gave them an outlet, so to do this, they have to take stock. I was fit to go out. Indeed, he left, crossed the Bahamas, got supplies in Jamaica and arrived in Haiti. It is an area with a lot of piracy, it is known. But not for this side and they were already arriving. They came to sail very calmly ”.

And explained: “I analyzed all the situations they could have had. But the ship floats, because when a ship sinks and more with this size, if it explodes or catches fire or breaks in the middle, it leaves a lot of debris. Something is still floating. I have flown a lot with planes that Carlos’ company paid for. The sea is like an iron. Terribly calm. There are no moss stains. Conditions were excellent until yesterday. The ship must float ”.

“If he had been wrecked, burned, exploded, there must be residue. There’s still a stain of diesel, something. It has two engines which carry a lot of oil. There is none of that in the water “added. “We are exhausting the possibilities. I’m looking for him anyway, everywhere, however. We don’t know how we resist. I know I will find him but it will be very difficult without all the help we need. We must continue to search because time is of the essence ”.

This weekend, Martín Juárez, brother Carlos Juárez, reported that a ship spotted flares last Monday over the waters of the Yucatan Canal, just at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico, which could have been launched by the crew of the lost ship. “It could be them. It matches the location, ”he said.

The ship, commanded by Cuban captain Fernández Díaz, had left Puerto Aventuras on September 17 for providing aid to the victims of the earthquake that killed more than 2,200 people in Haiti in August.

The trip was organized by volunteers from the Cancun International Rescue Brigade with the Missionaries of the Risen Christ. It took them a week to load the merchandise and equipment they had managed to recover.

After three days of travel, the MOI Guadalupe arrived at the port of Miragoane, in the department of Nippes. They brought not only food, but also a field hospital, “medical equipment and supplies to establish a primary medical service” for the children. the municipality of Asile, or most of the houses were destroyed by the earthquake.
