Thoughts of pre-selection
Belgium qualifies for the knockout stages after the elimination of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Midfielder Eden Hazard explained that the ouster of the best players in the world is "good for us" because it frees the heavyweights of Argentina and Portugal from the Belgian league. Yet, Belgium is watching a possible encounter with Brazil, the tournament's favorite in the quarterfinals, the winner of the France team, Uruguay, waiting even further. "If we think it's going to be easy [against Japan] we can lose," said Hazard (via the Telegraph), "so we have to be very serious, very focused from the beginning."
A loss would be a devastating blow for the so-called "golden generation" of Belgian players, which was developed by the system of youth clubs of the small country. The group reached the quarterbacks four years ago in Brazil, before tilting in the face of Argentina.
Japan should be well rested after playing six players in the last group match, a decision that almost derailed. The Blue Samurai has never moved beyond the knockout stages.
