Richie Porte abandoned the 2018 Tour de France after crashing on the ninth stage. The BMC Racing team leader fell in the first 10 kilometers of the stage, well before the race reached the 15 cobblestone sectors defining the road to Roubaix.
Porte entered the Tour de France in search of a place on the podium, and after winning the title of Tour de Suisse in June, seemed to want to challenge Chris Froome (Team Sky) for the yellow jersey. However, just 10 kilometers from the Porte race, the race of 9 was over.
After his fall, he was able to sit down and move to the side of the road, but he held his right shoulder and could not ride his bike. A complete medical diagnosis was not disclosed by the team.
Porte, 33, went into step 9, 10th to CP. He abandoned the Tour de France last year after a fall of Dan Martin.
Several other drivers crashed at the same time as Porte, including teammate Stefan Kung, André Greipel and Jens Keukeleire of Lotto Soudal, Guillaume Martin (Wanty-Gobert Group) and Jose Rojas (Movistar). The Spaniard was also forced to abandon the Tour de France.
