Alabama has a QB controversy. Nick Saban does not see it like that.

Alabama has a quarterback controversy, whether Nick Saban wants to call that or not. Jalen Hurts is good. In the limited time we saw Tua Tagovailoa, he was good too.

Saban sees nothing about his program that could create a quarterback controversy. The fact that he – rightly – snatched the starting QB that had earned him 25 games (and obtained a desultation from Deshaun Watson from a national title) in favor of a backup who presented a different skill and then won the game is apparently for the course. He also deflected transfer rumors about Hurts this offseason. There is no controversy in his mind. This is only the fruit of all our imaginations.

The action of Tagovailoa in this match is perhaps not too surprising, as Alabama said he was ready to play it in the Sugar Bowl against Clemson.

It was a brave decision to change quarterback, but Saban believed Tagovailoa for a long time. He talks about the nature of the "process" that Saban has – his strict goal of developing programs by focusing on the little things and improving each day, as well as the competitive nature of a football team. This can be summed up in semantics, but what we would call controversy is something that Saban considers a natural and even healthy competition.

Acknowledging the controversy also acknowledges that something is out of your control, and that's not exactly what Saban is inclined to do either.
