The accident occurred at dawn in the city of Abancay, in the Andes of southern Peru, when a wall of the country hotel of the Alhambra collapsed and crushed dozens of people dancing.

"Until now, the number of people killed has risen to 15 and the number of injured has been increased to 29," the National Institute of Civil Defense published on Twitter.

Images from local TV stations showed firefighters and police officers rescuing people in the middle of the collapsed roof, made of reddish tiles, rammed earth and bamboo. Several of the deceased were wrapped in pink fabrics by the rescuers who, minutes before, had adorned the walls of the event.

Rusby Zela, local head of Civil Defense, said that Abancay had suffered five days of rainy weather and that on Saturday, the rain started at 7 pm and remained constant even until the moment of tragedy. He also confirmed that the rains had caused the collapse of the meeting room.

The wounded were transferred to Guillermo Díaz hospital in Abancay town, in the Apurímac region.
