A housekeeper spent three days in the clogged elevator of the New York building where she works, until she was rescued yesterday by the fire department.
According to the New York Times, the incident occurred in a upscale neighborhood house in the Upper West Side, Manhattan, owned by Warren Stephens. Stephens owns a private investment bank based in Little Rock, Arkansas.
A spokesman confirmed that the firefighters had been summoned Monday at 10 am in a red brick house located on 65th Street, after the owners had noticed that the elevator was blocked.
Firefighters checked that the elevator was stopped between the second and third floors. They forced their door and found inside a person who said that he had been there since Friday, said the spokesman. This person was apparently "in good health" but was also taken to the hospital for examination, he said.
Several New York media have identified it as Fortaliza Marites; 53-year-old domestic worker who worked for the Stephens family for 18 years. The family itself issued a statement, published by the Associated Press, in which it was reported that Marites was "dehydrated, but stable" and had been "a valued member of the family for 18 years". The family promised "to investigate the causes of the unfortunate incident".
When Fortaliza arrived Friday at home, the family went out to spend the weekend in another place while she was stuck in the elevator and could not call anyone. It is not known if the elevator had an emergency warning system.
