Sebastián Piñera called for the release of two Chilean journalists detained in Venezuela

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, asked Wednesday the release of two journalists from the Chilean public channel TVN, who were arrested in Caracas by Venezuelan security agents while they were covering the crisis in that country.

"We call for the immediate release of @TVN journalists detained at #Venezuela"Said Piñera on his official Twitter account.

The journalist TVN Rodrigo Pérez and the cameraman Gonzalo BarahonaThey were arrested Tuesday with two other Venezuelan professionals in the vicinity of the Miraflores Government Palace in Caracas by members of Venezuelan security, according to the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP).

In a statement, the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that his arrest had taken place ina document control and by some kind of violation of the transit law to a point where it could not be returned"

The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made efforts to clarify the facts and obtain the release of the Chilean press team.

"Freedom of the press is another victim in Venezuela. The peaceful solution is free and democratic elections, now", said Piñera.

Several foreign communicators have been arrested or deported in recent years because they did not have the necessary permits to practice their profession in Venezuela.

The incident occurred as a result of protests organized by opposition leader Juan Guaidó on Wednesday to ask the armed forces to withdraw their support for President Nicolás Maduro and to call elections.
