Later, the White House declared that Trump had spoken to Guaidó "to congratulate him on his historic accession to the presidency" and to reinforce his "strong support for Venezuela's struggle to regain its democracy". The US government also said the leaders "agreed to maintain regular communication to support Venezuela's path to stability and restore bilateral relations."
The president of the National Assembly, recognized as US president in charge of Venezuela, said that Trump reiterated its commitment to humanitarian aid, after Washington has offered $ 20 million in food and medicine to deal with the urgency of the economic and social crisis in the country.
According to the White House, Guaidó thanked Trump for his commitment and emphasized the importance of "major protests in Venezuela against the old dictator Maduro, which will be held today and Saturday".
A few hours earlier, Trump had pointed out that Nicolás Maduro was "willing to negotiate" with the opposition thanks to the "American sanctions" on oil revenues. The United States on Monday approved sanctions against the state oil company PDVSA – source of 96 percent of the country's revenue – and froze Venezuelan accounts and badets, which were handed over to Guaidó.
In addition, the US president said that the leader of the opposition was "attacked" by the Supreme Court of Venezuela and that a "big demonstration is expected" for this Wednesday.
