The Democratic legislators of both Houses of Congress today wear white to attend the Speech on the state of the Union, that the president plans to give shortly Donald Trump, highlight the feminine power in the hemicycle and commemorate access to women's voting.
The initiative, promoted by the member of the Lower House for Florida, the democrat Lois Frankel, is a message of thanks to the voters in last November's legislative elections, which allowed a record number of women to be elected to Congress.
A total of 127 women – 102 in the Lower House and 25 in the Senate– They won the electoral battles in last November's parliamentary elections, although that number represents less than 25% of the total Congress membership, according to data from the Pew Research Center.
The choice of white color is also intended to honor the women's suffrage movement in the country, which led to the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 and allowed women to vote.
"By using the suffragist white color for the State of the Union speech, we send a message to all those who voted for the Democrats and who delivered us by a majority (in the lower house) "Said Frankel on his Twitter account.
"We promote the economic security of women and their families"added the legislator.
Some Democratic representatives also dressed in white during Trump's first speech at a joint congressional session in 2017, after baduming the presidency of the country.
Frankel had then declared that they were wearing this color "against any attempt on the part of the Trump administration to reverse the incredible progress made by women over the last century".
According to the White House, Trump will highlight five points in his speech: put an end to illegal immigration; trade agreements (including China and T-MEC); increase infrastructure spending; reduce the cost of access to health care; and military and diplomatic efforts abroad.
The biggest unknowns are if it will declare a national emergency reallocate funds to build the wall on the border with Mexico and will announce the date of his next meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
