Fierce storm in Rio de Janeiro: at least two deaths and decree on "the state of crisis" – 07/02/2019

Floods, felled trees and fear of landslides in the favelas were experienced this Wednesday evening in Rio de Janeiro, after a fierce temporary with winds of up to 110 km per hour. At least two people lost their livesat the moment when the municipality of the tourist city decreed the "state of crisis".

Secretary of Defense Roberto Robadey confirmed the deaths of two people. The victims were in Pedra de Guaratiba, a neighborhood in the west, and in Rocinha, a favela in the south. There is also a missing person.

The southernmost area, the most touristy, in which weave favelas and luxury residential neighborhoods, has been one of the most punished. On social networks, many neighbors posted videos containing powerful images of the pbadage of water. In many cases, the current carried dozens of cars.

In the favela of Rocinha, the largest of the city, 153.2 millimeters of water fell in four hours, more than half of the February historical average.

Rio Operations Center (COR) asked neighbors "only move in case of extreme need", warn the authorities if they appear "signs of cracks" in homes and be attentive to "sirens" who warn against the risk of landslides.

Winds up to 110 km / hour have blown in Copacabana, felling several trees on the busy Nossa Senhora Avenue in Copacabana, parallel to the beach, the CoR announced. Power outages also occurred in the densely populated area west and north of the city.

"The state of crisis" is the third and most important warning about precipitation that can cause floods or landslides.
