The Spanish government gave a 15-day ultimatum to the family of dictator Francisco Franco to choose a place of deposit of his remains after the exhumation that he intends to carry out after this period. If, for any reason, the family has not responded within this period, the government of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) will be chosen.

With this announcement, the administration of Pedro Sánchez has endorsed his decision to exhume the dictator of his mausoleum in the valley of the dead. This process was delayed by obstacles, mainly due to the frontal opposition of the seven grandchildren of the Galician dictator.

Their descendants want that when the remains of the one who ruled Spain from 1939 to 1975 leave the mausoleum, they find themselves in the cathedral of Almudena, in the heart of Madrid, where the daughter of Franco is buried in a private crypt.

But this option is ruled out by the Spanish government, who wishes to smoke it in a more discreet place, so as not to enjoy a "tomb of state" where his nostalgic people can decorate him with flowers. He asked the family to look for an alternative place.

"The family has been given 15 days to choose where to locate the dictator's mortal remains," Justice Minister Dolores Delgado said.

If the descendants of Franco do not agree on a place or do not respond to the ultimatum, the government will choose the site to smoke it again, he said.

The socialist government of Pedro Sanchez, who celebrates his last weeks after the elections on Friday, April 28, exhumed Franco from the monumental mausoleum where he rests, in the valley of the dead, about fifty kilometers northwest of Madrid, one of his priorities since taking office in June.
