Children fishing with a magnet from a World War II pomegranate on a river in Hamburg

According to the police, two eleven-year-old children playing fishing with a magnet on Alster, a tributary of the Elbe near Hamburg, fell on a grenade of World War II.

The pomegranate, covered with rust, no longer had the security lock. The bombers moved there then proceeded to a controlled explosion of the artifact at the same location as the discovery.

The appearance of bombs of the second world war is still common in Germany. In December 2011, the discovery of a 1.8-tonne British projectile forced the evacuation of some 45,000 people to Koblenz, nearly half of the city's population.
