At least 23 people were killed and dozens more injured on Sunday as a result of several powerful tornadoes that affected parts of the states of Alabama and Georgia in the southeastern United States , destroying roofs of houses and trees, reports AP.

All victims, including an 8-year-old girl, were reported in Lee County, Alabama, and several residents of the area are missing. The most affected county is Beauregard, where two deaths were recorded.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones told the media that the death toll could increase if rescue teams work in the disaster area in search of survivors.

The Medical Center of East Alabama, in the city of Opelika, has indicated that it is treating more than 40 tornado patients and that an undetermined number of injured , many of them seriously, have been transferred to other hospitals, reports NBC News.
