The State Department announced the retirement of the rest of the staff of the US Embbady in Venezuela. "The United States will remove all remaining staff from the @usembbadyve this week, "announced the head of diplomacy, Mike Pompeo, on Twitter. This decision reflects the deteriorating situation in Venezuela, as well as the conclusion that the presence of US diplomats at the embbady it's become a restriction of American politics"
February 24, the United States ordered "non-essential" diplomatic personnel to leave Venezuela, following the decision of the State Department not to adhere to the expulsion of the US mission ordered by President Nicolás Maduro. The State Department then indicated in a "security alert" that it had ordered the departure of its non-essential personnel and had also asked the American citizens living on Venezuelan territory to consider "seriously" to leave the country.
A day before, Maduro had announced the break of relations with Washington and gave a period of 72 hours to diplomats Americans leaving the country, after US President Donald Trump supported the self-proclaimed opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, as interim president, called the socialist leader "illegitimate". US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo replied that Maduro did not have "the legal authority" to make these decisions.
The same day, Maduro announced Thursday the closure of its embbady and all consulates in the United States after that country had recognized Juan Guaidó as acting head of state. "I decided to dismiss all the diplomatic staff (…) and close our embbady and all our consulates in the United StatesMaduro said at a special session of the judiciary, in which he accused Washington of promoting Guaidó during a coup d'etat.
