The UN and the European Union will invest $ 6 million to reduce the rate of feminicides in Argentina

For more than ten years, we have recorded one murder per bad every 30 hours in our country. In 2017 alone, there were 274 femicides, added to transvesticides, transfemicidios and related femicides, where they treated a total of 308 cases. Salta and Jujuy are two of the provinces with the highest rates, while Buenos Aires is the most involved. This is why Argentina will receive international aid to reduce these figures: they will be six million dollars between 2019 and 2020.

The initiative is called "Spotlight" and comes from an alliance between the European Union and the United Nations. They seek to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls around the world. It focuses on domestic violence, badual violence, trafficking in human beings and badual and labor exploitation. At the same time, he wants governments to badume the corresponding political commitments, including those that guarantee gender equality in order to invest in them.

According to the World Health Organization, one in three women experiences physical or badual violence at some point in their lives. Spotlight, thanks to this, provides for an investment of 500 million euros, the European Union being the main investor. The countries in Latin America that will receive these investments are Argentina, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and El Salvador. Yesterday was announced the launch of the plan for this Thursday.

"The goal is to eliminate violence, because this scourge is unacceptable and is a reality around the world.We have chosen different countries and Argentina is the only one in South America because there is has a lot of femicides, but also because a civil society wants to act, "said Aude Coliche, ambbadador for the European Union in the country.

The money will be mainly invested in prevention campaigns that advertise in the media and social networks, as well as in neighborhoods and educational institutions. To reach these places, there will be civil society projects that will be allocated ten percent of the investment, or $ 600,000.

"It's a dream that this program is in Argentina, Spotlight means focusing and enlightening, and this subject is very important because we are concerned about statistics." Violence and feminicides are a cultural problem that does not end with one day for the other but is a process that takes years.The program will maintain policies over time because violence must be a public problem for at least 20 years.Here, the only enemy is patriarchy and machismo, "said the director of the National Institute of Women, Fabiana Túñez.
