World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on March 21st. The United Nations General Assembly instituted this day in 2011.

March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day. In Argentina, about 40,000 people have this genetic disease. On December 19, 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) instituted this date.

It has been done with the intention that states and society are becoming more aware of the issue, necessary to create conditions and opportunities for people with this genetic disease to live life fully in integration with others, as recognized by the 2030 Agenda of the International Organization for Sustainable Development.

Characteristics

The syndrome is characterized by the presence of a varying degree of cognitive impairment and particular physical characteristics that give it a recognizable appearance.

It owes its name to John Langdon Down, who was the first to describe this genetic alteration in 1866, although he never discovered the causes that produced it.

This year's motto

This year, the celebration of World Down Syndrome Day will focus on the motto: "Do not leave anyone behind". According to the first National Disability Survey (Endi) 2015, about 40,000 people have this hereditary alteration in Argentina.
