The main suspect of the attack perpetrated Monday in the Dutch city of Utrecht, which resulted in three deaths, confessed this Friday during his first appearance before the judge of the case and badured that he was acting alone, according to the Netherlands Attorney's Office in a statement.
The Dutch judge has decided to extend the 14-day pre-trial detention Gokmen Tanis, 37, of Turkish descent, has been formally charged with multiple murders and terrorism. Before the end of two weeks, the duration can be extended up to 90 days.
The Attorney General's office, which refused to give details of Tanis' judicial declaration referring to "the interest of the investigation", also indicated that the other three suspects arrested, all men aged 23, 27 and 40, were released without charge.
The 40-year-old man was arrested Tuesday because Tanis was at home when he was captured. As for the other two, they were arrested on Monday because a police dog had found in the Renault Clio a trace that Tanis had used for the attack that had led to a house they were in.
Tanis opened fire on the tram station located on Place 24 de Octubre in Utrecht and escaped. The city was completely paralyzed until security forces managed to arrest it seven hours later. Tanis is on trial for a rape case and has other criminal background.
Tanis also undergoes psychological tests. The district court of Utrecht refused to give details on the note left by the suspect in the car that he kidnapped before committing the attack, which local media claim to contain jihadist ideas. You are allowed to speak only with your lawyer.
