On April 2, 1982, the Argentine Armed Forces recovered the Falklands and Britain reacted by sending a powerful fleet to recapture the islands.

That's how it started a 74-day war that ended on June 14 with the capitulation of Argentina. A total of 650 Argentines and 258 Britons died.

The defeat precipitated the fall of the military junta that ruled Argentina, while in the UK, the victory contributed to the re-election of the Margaret Thatcher government in 1983.
