A Taiwanese doctor created a big surprise when he received a patient at his office. The 28-year-old girl, who arrived with pain and an inflamed eye in her left eye, turned out to have four live bees inside. The specialist managed to remove them by holding them by the legs.
How did it happen? The girl – known as Ms. He – was in the cemetery, visiting her parents as part of the Qingming Festival. On this day, people often offer food to the dead, pray for them, and clean the graves. As he wandered around, he felt something enter his eye, even though he thought it was only earth and continued the ritual.
However, at that time, the whole area was inflamed and painful, so he went to see an ophthalmologist. It's like this that he discovered the four little bees. "She could not close her eyes completely.I took the microscope and found something black that looked like the leg of an insect.I took it and slowly I l? Then I saw another and another and another, they were all alive and intact, "said Dr. Hong Chi Ting at the BBC.
These are not common bees but a type called Halictidae, also known as "sweat bees". They usually measure between 4 (as in this case) and 10 millimeters and are attracted to people's sweat. They can be recognized by their dark or green color.
This is the first case recorded on the island and the doctor who treated the young woman believes that a gust of wind may have washed away and they were trapped. "These bees do not usually attack people, even if they like to drink sweat, hence their name," he added.
Once removed, the insects were sent to another institution for badysis, while Ms. He was released and they expect her to recover fully. The specialist emphasized the importance of not scratching the eyes with the bees inside, because they could have produced a poison and, in the worst case, left them blind. The girl did not do it since she was wearing contact lenses and was afraid to break them.
