The incident occurred when a great fire ravaged Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The flames damaged a guard post at the top of a prayer hall.

On social networks, you can see images of the fire coming out of the roof of an area known as the Marwani prayer hall. The Palestine News Agency quoted a caretaker of the building saying that "the fire started outside and spread to the roof of the prayer hall, but the brigade of the Islamic Wafq of Jerusalem – Islamic religious trust that controls this type of buildings- managed to control it satisfactorily"

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third sacred place of Islam and a piece fundamental in the Arab-Israeli conflict, as it is located in the Old City of East Jerusalem, originally occupied by Jordan in 1948, then by Israel in 1967, and finally annexed in 1980.

As the fire continued, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his condolences for the fire of Notre Dame Cathedral. "The Presidency confirms its solidarity with our friends in France for this incident "said the statement.
