Between 1985-90 and 2006-2011, at the age of 69, he was charged with the crime of money laundering. He had been the subject of an investigation into bribes during the construction of a train for Lima, a project involving the Brazilian construction company.

According to what was published by the newspaper
RPP, the exmandatario was suspected of having received from entrepreneur Miguel Atala more than a million dollars through the intermediary of an offshore company established in Panama. One of his former advisers, Luis Nava Guibert, is designated as an intermediary between the two.

Last night in an interview with the RPP, Garcia admitted to meeting Atala: "I had a social friendship with Mr. Atala because he was a big textile manufacturer, he was a very good businessman. important". In addition, he explained that he was related to him "on certain occasions", for example when creating the Institute of Labor.

"We had to put people related to the world of work and entrepreneurs, it was a subject that aimed to generate ideas on how to employ people, that is, instead of using big machines in the mines, to call on the workforce, this has unfortunately never worked, "he said.

In addition, the exmandatario was then "convinced" that Guibert was going to give his "explanations" on the accusations that he would have received money from Brazilian society.

Odebrecht is at the center of the biggest corruption scandal in Latin America, having been admitted in 2016 as part of an agreement with the US Department of Justice that was corrupting officials from all over Latin America with $ 800 million in exchange for receiving major infrastructure contracts.
