The wave of attacks by several detonations during this Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka has left at least 207 dead and more than 450 wounded. The
attack
Eight bomb explosions took place, mainly in the tourist and public points of the capital, Colombo, during a brief early morning period.
Among the places targeted in this city were the three luxury hotels – Cinnamon Grand, Shangri-La and the Kingsbury and San Antonio sanctuaries, frequented by foreign tourists. The church of San Sebastian in Negombo was also devastated.
What do we know up to now
- Of the 207 people killed, there are at least 9 foreigners and this number could reach 27.
- The bomb attacks began at 8:45 am local time in three luxury hotels in Colombo and three churches, one in that city, another in western Katana and another in the east of Batticaloa.
- The seventh detonation took place a few hours later in a small hotel south of downtown Colombo
- The eighth and last bomb exploded in a residential complex in the Dermatagode district of the capital.
- Until now, no organization has claimed the attacks.
- The services of WhatsApp, Viber and Facebook do not work. According to local media, they have been temporarily blocked, but other sources indicate that telephone and internet networks are saturated.
- The country's authorities have introduced a curfew and authorized the police to immediately arrest those who do not comply.
- The population of Sri Lanka is mainly Buddhist and only 7% profess the Catholic religion.
