At least 17 dead after landslide due to rains in Colombia | Chronic

17 people were victims of a landslide caused by heavy rains that struck a city in southwestern Colombia. In addition, there are dozens of missing persons.

The incident was recorded in the early hours of Sunday, when the collapse resulted in several houses in the district of Roses, in the department of Cauca. As soon as the accident, an badistance operation was organized for the inhabitants of the place. It was then that the authorities discovered that 17 people had lost their lives.

However, they estimate that this figure will be higher because about thirty locals have disappeared under the mud that has buried near a dozen houses, as confirmed the fire chief of Timbío José Burbanowho participated in the operation with members of the police, army and relief agencies.

Meanwhile, the five wounded were taken to a hospital in the area where they received the first treatment.

For its part, the National Disaster Risk Management Unit announced that the inhabitants of the affected area had already been warned of a possible collapse, due to the "vulnerability" from the region, but they ignored it because "people do not easily accept to withdraw from their places of life".

In any case, when he is informed of the tragedy, the president, Iván Duque, he said: "Our solidarity with the relatives of the victims of the collapse occurred this morning in Rosas, Cauca, due to heavy rains".

The storm that caused the disaster in Cauca also resulted in complications in several parts of Colombia. In Cali, for example, more than ten neighborhoods have been flooded, affecting thousands of people. A similar situation crossed Nariño and Medellín.
