Canada on Thursday threatened to sue Facebook, saying the company was refusing to comply with the country's privacy laws and baduming "the responsibility to protect" information from Canadians, as a result of an investigation that determined that the company "… committed serious offenses."

As noted by the Office of the Privacy Commission of Canada, an agency dependent on the Canadian Parliament, in a report released Thursday about the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook "refuses to implement the recommendations to remedy the deficiencies ".

Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien said in a statement: "Facebook's refusal to act responsibly is a source of concern given the large amount of sensitive personal information that users have entrusted to this company."

According to the regulators, the company has refused to submit to audits of its policies and practices over the next five years.

Therrien also criticized the fact that the privacy framework used by the company was "empty" and that its terms were vague and so elastic that they had no real meaning in terms of protection.

On Wednesday, the company announced that it had closed the first quarter of 2019 with profits 51% lower than those of the same period last year. However, this figure is affected by calculations that the Federal Trade Commission will fine the US $ 3 billion in user privacy investigations.
