A cruise of some 300 people on board was quarantined by the authorities of the island of Santa Lucia after the discovery of a confirmed case of measles.

The cruise was still docked and no one was allowed to disembark, said Dr. Merlene Fredericks-James, responsible for the island's health.

"An infected person can easily infect other people," he said in a public statement.

A doctor on board the ship requested 100 doses of the measles vaccine, which St. Lucia provides for free, Fredericks-James added. He also said that it was necessary to monitor because the incubation period varies between 10 and 12 days before the onset of symptoms.

An officer of the Santa Lucia Marine Police identified the vessel as the Freewinds, which would be 134 meters long and belong to the Church of Scientology.
