In Pakistan, about 90 people have been infected with the HIV virus through a doctor using a contaminated syringe, AFP reported, citing police in Larkana. Among them, there are at least 65 children.
Officials said they arrested the individual "after receiving complaints from health authorities," and added thatThey received information that the doctor was also HIV-positive. According to local media, the suspect is Muzaffar Ghangharo, a government employee who also runs a private clinic.
It was reported that the tests were carried out after last week the authorities warned that 18 children in the suburbs of the city had been tested positive for the virus that causes AIDS. Subsequent reviews revealed that "more than 90 people were HIV-positive," said Abdul Rehaman, a local health worker.
The authorities have linked the outbreak to a single doctor who reportedly used a contaminated syringe in his patients. They said the parents of infected children had also been tested, but that they were negative.
Muzaffar Ghangharo, the local press, denied any responsibility for the spread of the virus and told reporters that had he known that he was carrying the virus, treatment would have been requested.
