He is the first Israeli to die in the new wave of violence between the Hebrew state and Palestinian armed groups that began on Saturday.

Since then, more than 250 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip against Israel., according to the Israeli armed forces. The Hebrew State responded with aerial attacks and tanks.

The escalation of the conflict, which comes just before the start of the holy month of Ramadan and the Israeli Independence Day, led the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convene a security meeting with their military leaders.

On Friday, an Israeli air strike in retaliation killed two Hamas members.

Israel attacked Gaza Saturday by air and with tanks, after Palestinian militants launched more than 200 rockets into Israeli towns and villages. The Israeli army said it had targeted shuttles and Hamas facilities.

Islamic Jihad issued a statement in which it said the missile attacks were a response to Friday's events.

In late March, under the auspices of Egypt and the UN, a ceasefire was negotiated, announced by Hamas – ruling in the Gaza Strip – but never confirmed by Israel. This helped maintain relative calm in the Israeli parliamentary elections on 9 April.

But the situation has deteriorated during this week. Palestinian rocket and arson fires returned, as did Israeli retaliation.

Israel and Hamas have clashed in three wars since 2008.
