The Iranian government announced Wednesday that suspends the application of "some" of its "commitments" to the nuclear agreement 2015 in response to the US unilateral decision to withdraw from this pact just a year ago and reinstate the sanctions.
From today, Iran will stop limiting its reserves of heavy water and enriched uranium. Tehran has threatened to give up other commitments if, within 60 days, the other signatories of the agreement – Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and the US Germany – did not find a solution to mitigate the effects of US sanctions against the Persian country, particularly in the oil and banking sectors.
"After the violation of the United States, Iran will renounce two actions until today, that is to say that each time our enriched uranium production reaches 300 kilos, we sell it to two countries we are suspending it today and we are also stopping selling heavy water, "Rohaní reported in a televised speech.
The Chairman recalled that items 26 and 36 of the "Comprehensive Plan of Joint Action" (JCPOA) specify that Iran has the right to reduce its commitments if the other parties do not fulfill their obligations.
Therefore, if during this 60-day period, these five countries succeed in securing Iranian oil exports and eliminate banking sanctions, Iran will once again meet the two requirements mentioned above.
Otherwise, Rohaní warned that they would take two other measures: "The first is that we will not respect the commitment to maintain the enrichment of uranium at 3.67% and the second is that we will complete the heavy-water reactor ourselves Arak, "he said.
The announcement takes place in a climate of exacerbated tensions between Iran and the United States, who said Tuesday that she was sending B-52 bombers into the Gulf.
Washington has made Iran its number one enemy in the Middle East. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, during a surprise visit to Baghdad, on Tuesday accused Tehran of preparing "imminent attacks" against US forces.
"A surgery"
The agreement "was to undergo surgery after a year of sedatives without effects," said Rohani in a medical metaphor. "This surgery is meant to save him, not to destroy him," he insisted.
"The window to diplomacy will not stay that long, and the responsibility for the failure and its likely consequences will rest entirely with the United States" and other parties to the agreement, Tehran added.
The decision was officially notified to the ambbadadors of the countries that are still part of this agreement: United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany.
Russia denounced US "irrational pressure"
Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced on Wednesday the "irrational pressure" Iran suffers "arbitrary and unthinking decisions" that provoke "boring measures," Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov told reporters, adding that Russia remains "attached" to the agreement nuclear power plant.
For its part, Beijing badured that "the maintenance and application of the agreement is essential responsibility of all parties", according to the spokesman of Chinese diplomacy, Geng Shuang
Israel, fervent enemy of Tehran and the agreement, said on Wednesday that it "would not allow" Iran to manufacture nuclear weapons.
Validated by a United Nations Security Council resolution, the agreement allowed Iran to obtain a partial lifting of the international sanctions to which it was subject.
In return, Tehran agreed to drastically limit its nuclear program and pledged not to seek to develop nuclear weapons.
In charge of verifying the application of the agreement by Iran, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has so far certified that Tehran is honoring its commitments.
In this sense, Iran has limited its heavy water stock to a maximum of 130 tons and its enriched uranium (UF6) reserves to 300 kg. He also gave up enriching uranium at a percentage higher than 3.67%.
