Why the Internet day is celebrated today

The Internet Day is celebrated every 17 May. Or, to be more specific: World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (DMTSI). The goal of this date is to become aware of the impact of information technology on the economy and society.

The goal is to bridge the digital divide, badyze progress to date and badess what remains to be done. According to data from the International Union of Communication (ITU), by the end of 2018, 51.2% of the world's population, or 3.9 billion people, had access to the Internet, which represents a jump of nearly 3% in one year.

In developed countries, the number of connected users is 80.9% compared to 45.3% in developing economies, compared with 7.7% in 2005 in the region. .

It should be noted that in 2011, the UN General Assembly declared that Internet access was a human right. This is precisely because of its value and relevance in all areas of society.

World Telecommunication Day is celebrated every May 17 since 1969 to commemorate the founding of ITU and the signing of the first international telegraph agreement in 1865. This agreement was approved by the Plenipotentiary Conference of Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973 .

Then came the web and with it the need to have a new allusive date. Or maybe it would be better to keep it? It was decided to do the last one. It was so in November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society asked the United Nations General Assembly to declare May 17 World Day of the Society of the Information or day of the Internet, as we know it today.

In March 2006, the General Assembly adopted a resolution (A / RES / 60/252) stating that World Information Society Day would be commemorated every 17 May. This has been the case since the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in Antalya (Turkey) in November 2006, which decided to formalize this date.

In the resolution, all member countries are invited to celebrate this date with various initiatives to discuss the most relevant aspects related to the information society. That is why today, in different parts of the world, events and talks will take place for this purpose.
