Russian scientists have found the head of a wolf of the ice age, with everything and its fur, preserved in the Siberian permafrost.
The leader of the wolf, who died 40,000 years ago, was discovered in the Russian Arctic region of Yakutia.
Valery Plotnikov, senior researcher at the local chapter of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the animal belonged to an old subspecies of wolf that lived at the same time as the mammoths and s 39; was off with them.
Scientists said that the head belonged to an adult wolf, about 25% larger than the wolves of today, but without specifying whether it was a man or of a woman.
Plotnikov said the discovery was unique because scientists had previously found only skulls of wolves devoid of tissue and fur, while the head also has ears, a tongue and a brain, all of which are very well preserved.
