At least one person died and 13 others were injured Thursday in a large fire at a thermoelectric power plant in Mitischi, near Moscow, Russia. Firefighters have already located the fire and have controlled it.
According to local media reports, the incident began in the high pressure preheater due to the explosion of one of the gas pipelines fueling the plant. The fire has spread over an area of 800 square meters and the flames have reached a height of 50 meters.
In total, there would be 14 victims: one of them died, another was sent by helicopter to a burn-out treatment center and 12 other people received outpatient medical care, said a spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
They also confirmed that the firefighters had located the source of the fire and had it checked. The incident forced the authorities to suspend traffic near the thermoelectric plant.
"The unit reduces power to zero but there is no risk of power failure and other production units have increased their power generation", reported the Ministry of Energy.
With a service serving a million users, the plant operates since the 1990s and generates energy from natural gas. Due to the height of the flames, the fact was made visible from the Russian capital.
