Awada Receives 2019 World Teachers' Prize Laureate Peter Tabichi

The first lady, Juliana Awada, received this Saturday the African priest and teacher Quinta de Olivos, Peter Tabichi, winner of the 2019 Global Teacher Prize, pointing out that he was "the best teacher in the world for his work in Kenya".

"It was a moving and very interesting meeting," said Awada at the end of the meeting that took place in the official residence of President Mauricio Macri.

He also said that Tabichi "is a Franciscan father considered the best teacher in the world for his work in Kenya to help children of the most vulnerable populations."

The first lady gave the Franciscan a scarf made by Argentinian artisans, "to thank her for her visit to our country and her impressive commitment that inspires so many people," announced today the presidency.

Peter teaches at Keriko High School in Pwani Village, located in a remote, semi-arid part of Kenya's Rift Valley, where students of various cultures and religions learn in poorly equipped clbadrooms.

95% of students come from poor families, nearly a third are orphans or have one parent and many are left without food at home. Drug addiction, early pregnancy, school dropouts, young marriages and suicides are common, they reported on the World Teachers' Award website.

Peter has created a Talent Development Club and expanded the School Science Club by helping students design research projects of such quality that 60% of them now qualify. for national competitions. His students also won an award from the Royal Society of Chemistry after taking advantage of the life of local factories to produce electricity.

Peter and four colleagues also give individual clbades to students in mathematics and non-performing science outside of clbades and weekends.
