The authorities have not wasted time to send Mexican drug dealer Joaquin "el Chapo" Guzman to a maximum security prison where he will serve his life sentence, said one of his lawyers Thursday.

Jeffrey Lichtman said Thursday that Guzman was quickly piloted by helicopter just hours after reading his sentence Wednesday in New York.

He added that the authorities only told him that his client was going to a maximum security institution in Florence, Colorado.

Prison officials and prosecutors did not say Thursday where Guzmán was.

Since extraditing him to the United States in 2017 to be prosecuted for drug trafficking, extreme security measures have been taken against Guzmán.

The authorities are determined to avoid repeating the escapements known from the prison "El Chapo" manufactured in Mexico.
