French paleontologists have found the bones of a giant dinosaur femur during a search in southwestern France. Since 2010, remains of some of the largest animals that have ever existed on Earth have been discovered.
It is thought that the femur, two meters long and 400 kilos, found in the town of Angeac-Charente, belonged to a sauropod, herbivorous dinosaurs with long neck and tail that extended at the end of the Jurbadic, about 140 million years
Scientists at the site near the town of Cognac have discovered more than 7,500 fossils from more than 40 different species since 2010, making it one of the largest discoveries of this type in Europe, according to El Mundo.
The paleontologist of the Natural History Museum of Paris, Ronan Allain, said during a dialogue with local media that this left femur was part of a set of bones of equal size, which is about to be completed by paleontologists. In this regard, he stated that "possibly" is the back of a sauropod "which should be about 30 meters long".
In the same vein, Allain said: "This is a great discovery.I was particularly surprised by the state of conservation of the femur. These animals probably weighed between 40 and 50 tons. "
About the discovery
It all started when a young doctoral student, Maxime Lbaderon, started to scratch a bone, which would become the monumental femur.
