Two girls born by the head were separated after a marathon operation

Two Siamese from Bangladesh united by the head were separated this Friday in Dhaka after a long surgerysaid the Hungarian doctors who operated on them as part of a humanitarian project.

The two girls are in "steady state after final separation"which lasted about thirty hours and mobilized a team of 35 Hungarian specialists," he told AFP neurosurgeon Andras Csokay.

"We must remain cautious in the postoperative phase"added the doctor, who directs the operation for the Hungarian NGO Action for the defenseless (ADPF).

Rabeya and Rukaya, three years old, were born with their skulls united on top, a very rare malformation which in most cases leads to early death newborns. Very few operations of this type have succeeded so far.

"It was one of the most important and complicated malformations of my life," said Gergely Pataki, head of plastic surgery.

The operation took place at the Dhaka Military Hospital, where the father of the twins, Rafiqul Islam, did not hide his happiness.

"The doctors separated my babies, I saw them with my own eyes, they are fine now," he said. "I hope my daughters are completely restored and can wear a normal lifehe added.
