The president of Uruguay, Tabaré Vázquez (Photo)At a press conference, he said in a routine tomography study that he was "a right lung nodule with very firm features, possibly a malignant process." Vázquez said his personal physician, Mario Zelarayan, would now provide information about his diagnosis, prognosis and steps to follow.

This discovery "requires me to carry out further studies requiring at most a hospital stay of a day or two," added the president. With these studies, a "definitive diagnosis, a prognosis" will be developed and "possible treatments that I may have to do" will be known, "he added.

Vázquez said that any checks and treatments will be carried out in Uruguay. "We have a medical corps of excellence, with advanced technology, and institutions as needed in situations like this," he said.

"I feel perfectly well, I have not had any symptoms or signs attributable to this situation," added the president, who became widowed on July 31, before saying that he was acting "an imaging result resulting from periodic studies that I have done and that it is good that every citizen be accomplished".

The announcement, made public by the president in the Montevideo Executive Tower, brought together a large part of the government, military authorities and even the country's vice president, Lucia Topolansky. Vázquez, an oncologist who declared the war on tobacco in Uruguay, fulfills his second presidential term since 2015, ending in March 2020.
