Italy: Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has resigned

After the crisis in the coalition of parties that formed the Italian government, the country's Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, announced Tuesday that he was resigning from his post.

"This government is finished. I will submit my resignation to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, "said Conté in a strong speech in the Senate.

The announcement was made after the leader of the leagueItalian Interior Minister and Vice President of the Italian Executive Matteo Salvini will present a motion of no confidence against him. In this sense, Conte made a very harsh speech against the official, in which accused him of opportunism and "institutional irresponsibility", having triggered a crisis "that has led the country to a spiral of political and financial uncertainty".

It is that at the beginning of the month, Matteo Salvini, head of the League and current Minister of the Interior, blasted the ruling coalition from this European country. In those days, the official called for early elections.

The politician, arrived at the government in June thanks to the 17% that he had obtained in the legislative elections of March 2018, managed to increase his popularity with a hard policy against immigrants.

His party came in first with 34% of the vote in the European elections in May, and polls currently give him between 36% and 38% of voting intentions, what is it? dream of becoming prime minister, forming the government with another smaller right-wing party, Fratelli of Italia.

The "bone of contention"

The complicated deal between the League and the M5E was finally broken after the crisis triggered on August 8 by Salvini, demanding early elections.

Breaking between the two allies – whose visions in almost all issues are very different – thorough after Wednesday's vote in the Senate in favor of the controversial high-speed line project between France and Italy, known as the TAV.

The Allies voted in the Senate in the opposite direction and the text was approved at the request of Salvini, while the M5E was a minority. Shortly after, the far right leader asked early elections and announced that he would table a motion of censure against the Italian Prime Minister.
