John Bercow, one of the most popular faces of the Brexit crisis, announced today his resignation from his position as Speaker of the House of Commons. In an emotionally charged speech at Westminster, Bercow announced that he would leave this post on October 31.
In recent years, more Eurosceptic parliamentarians have accused Bercow of favoring supporters of limiting Britain's exit from the European Union. Last week, Boris Johnson's executive announced his intention to nominate a candidate in the upcoming elections in order to replace Bercow from his position in the House, even though he had been selected as a member of the group conservative, because no candidate is presented against the speaker in his constituency.
As he explained today, his resignation will be advanced if early elections were held before the end of October and the Parliament dissolved, which Johnson wants but rejects the opposition.
When he resigns, Bercow will have had ten years as a speaker, a position he held in 2009, while Gordon Brown was prime minister. He replaced Michael Martin in the middle of the storm with the publication of surplus spending that parliamentarians have transferred to the Treasury.
