Some videos of the moment are circulating on social networks. The recordings show the mayor when he is dragged several meters by the vehicle before being rescued by the police.

The Attorney General's office, which said the official "is safe and sound and examined by medical experts," arrested 11 people accused of attempting to remove the city councilor.

The authors, belonging to the community of Santa Rita Invernadero, according to local authorities and the media, were angry because they had been asking for several months that the official complies with their offer.

Santa Rita Invernadero, in Chiapas, is a marginalized community populated by members of the Tojolabal ethnic group and located a few kilometers from the Montes Azules Nature Reserve.

It is a town of about 700 inhabitants and 120 houses, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

Many locals do not speak Spanish and, according to data from the Ministry of Public Education, 10% of the population is illiterate.

The area where it is located has been the scene of conflicts related to land ownership, as well as the use of forests and jungle nearby.

It is also an area of ​​influence of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN), which celebrated last January the 25th anniversary of its public presence in the communities of the municipality.

Last July, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador visited the region with Mayor Escandón Hernández.

After the incident with the residents of Santa Rita, the mayor warned that there would be penalties for those who dragged him with the van.

Old nonconformity

This is not the first time that Santa Rita's neighbors are showing their anger against the authorities.

Municipal employees were rescued by the police after a lively discussion with the neighbors.

Mayor Escandón Hernández himself has already faced the anger of this community.

A few months ago, a group of neighbors went to the city palace to claim the fulfillment of their promises, but as the official was not broken furniture and office equipment.

After the Mayor's aggression, eleven people were arrested.
