Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has decided to suspend trials of China’s covid-19 vaccine after a “serious incident” was reported. The news was notified by the regulator of the studies that were conducted to verify the effectiveness of inoculations.
According to local CBN media, the disruption was due to the death of one of the volunteers participating in the CoronaVac study in the Latin American country. The deceased will be of Brazilian nationality and will not suffer from covid-19.
On the other hand, Anvisa said an adverse incident can include death, potentially fatal side effects, severe disability, hospitalization and other “events.”
The measure will be for an indefinite period, until the causes of death are clarified. This type of suspension is provided for by Anvisa regulations and is part of the procedures established in clinical studies conducted in Brazil.
Participation of 9000 volunteers
In total, since the end of July, 9,000 professionals in the health sector have volunteered to participate in the final phase of clinical trials for the Coronavac vaccine, developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac Biotech.
At that time, the governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, assured that if the vaccine works, the manufacture will begin in Brazil at the beginning of 2021. “If it succeeds, as we hope, the vaccine will be produced in the Butantan Institute at the beginning of next year with more than 120 million doses, ”he noted.
A few weeks ago, the Minister of Health of the South American giant, Eduardo Pazuello, announced the purchase of millions of doses of CoronaVac, which will also be produced by the Brazilian institute Butantan.
However, the president of the nation, Jair Bolsonaro, discredits the official statements. “The Brazilian people will not be anyone’s guinea pig,” the president said on the networks, where he reiterated that Brazil would not buy the vaccine from China.
“For my government, any vaccine, before being administered to the population, must be scientifically proven by the Ministry of Health and certified by the National Agency for Health Surveillance (Anvisa),” added Bolsonaro.
The country with the most cases in Latin America
Brazilian health authorities on Monday reported 10,917 new cases of covid-19 and 231 more deaths in the past 24 hours.
According to the daily bulletin published by the National Council of Secretaries of Health (CONASS), with these updated data, the number of infections accumulated since the start of the epidemic is 5,675,032, while the total number of people who died was 162,628, being the country worst affected by the pandemic in Latin America.
