Brazil has recorded the first possible positive case of infection in its territory by the dangerous fungus ‘Candida auris’, resistant to the main antifungals, reported the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) of the South American country.
The infection was detected on December 7 in a patient admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Baha State. At the moment, phenotypic analyzes of the fungus are underway to verify its susceptibility profile and confirm the diagnosis.
In order to monitor and prevent the spread of the microorganism throughout the country, a national working group was formed, made up of representatives from different entities of the health system and laboratories.
Why is “Candida auris” so dangerous?
“Candida auris” is an emerging fungus that poses a serious threat to global health and was first identified in 2009 in Japan as a cause of disease in humans. Some strains of this organism are resistant to the main antifungal drugs.
This fungus is difficult to identify with standard laboratory methods and requires specific procedures because “C. auris’ can be mistaken for other species of eukaryotic organisms and lead to inappropriate treatment, says the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Candida auris can enter a person’s bloodstream and spread throughout the body, causing serious invasive infections with up to 40% hospital mortality. The body has caused epidemics in health care facilities in the United States and infections have been reported in more than 30 countries.
