Chile has overcome the barrier of 2,000 daily cases of coronavirus, a figure that had not been recorded for nearly three months, in a context of increasing infections mainly in the region of Santiago, which was quarantine on weekends, the health authority reported today.
In the last 24 hours, the country reported 2139 infections of covid-19 and 40 deaths from the disease, bringing the cumulative totals since the start of the pandemic to 571,919 and 15,886, respectively, according to the Department of Health.
The last time more than 2,000 patients were diagnosed in Chile, 2,109, was on September 26.
“These are figures that worry us and have led us to take strict health measures; For the fight against the coronavirus, it is essential that we maintain self-care measures such as the use of a mask, physical distancing and hand washing, ”said the Minister of Health Enrique Paris to the press, quoted by the AFP press agency.
According to the pandemic report, during this week the number of daily infections did not drop and the Chilean capital, Santiago, became the region with the most daily cases, after detecting 479 new patients with covid-19.
The recent rebound in cases put Chilean authorities on high alert, as they had stabilized at an average between 1,000 and 1,500, after a spike in infections in June, when 7,000 have been reached.
Faced with this situation, one of the last measures adopted by the Government took place in Santiago, where it quarantined over the weekend, with restrictions on the movement of people and closure of shopping centers, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, a measure criticized by business leaders.
In addition, the government has developed a protocol for the operation of street fairs for small traders.
Another region that is alerting authorities is La Araucanía in southern Chile, where they fear cases will skyrocket after next Monday, as the region is the epicenter of the solar eclipse sighting and that the city of Pucón will receive around 80,000 inhabitants. .
