An unscrupulous woman made up a horror story: she told everyone she had terminal cancer. Behind this invention was a plan :; raise thousands of dollars so you can marry your partner and have the wedding of your dreams. But the story did not end well for her. Toni Standen, 29, has just been arrested in England.
District Judge Nicholas Sanders jailed her for five months in Chester Magistrates’ Court and ordered her to return the financial donations she had received.
The British made it all up and told his friends that the disease had spread to the brain, to the bones and “it was everywhere”. To convince them, he shaved his head, leaving him bald, and gave an interview in various media to pay for his marriage.
The woman shaved her head to pretend she was sick.
Her friends launched a campaign on the GoFundMe platform and thus succeeded in raising funds to make the woman’s “last wish” come true. They raised £ 8,500, around $ 11,000. The money was invested in the marriage “they deserved”, according to British media.
The luxurious wedding took place at the end of 2019, it had over 150 guests. The money raised was also enough for the newlyweds to spend their honeymoon in Turkey, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Italy.
But Toni Standen’s cheating did not end there and in January he told those close to him that doctors had confirmed he had only 2 months to live.
The thousand faces of Toni Standen, a crook.
In February, a message appeared on his Facebook account saying he had passed away. “Toni passed away last night surrounded by friends and family, strong to the end.” However, a few days later, he blamed the “hackers” for this message.
Standen’s prank ended in April when he said he had caught the coronavirus. Her friends started to doubt, until she couldn’t take it anymore and revealed the truth.
“He could have won an Oscar, his performance was so good. He cheated on us all … He told me he was dying and I fell in the trap, ”college colleague Cheryl Aston told the Sunday Mirror.
The 29-year-old woman and her partner, before their arrest.
“We were all amazed by this woman who, instead of dying as ‘cancer’ took hold of her, grew stronger every day. But she knew full well that no one would question the honesty or integrity of a cancer victim, ”another friend of the British con artist said.
In a text message to her friends after admitting to her scam, she said: “I love you all, I’m grateful for everything over the past two years. I’m sorry for all of this, I’m ashamed and heartbroken and right now I’m fighting to repair the damage. “
Judge Sanders, in ordering the arrest of the mythomaniac, was forceful. “You used this money raised through the generosity of strangers to fund a wedding and a vacation. You never stopped. You don’t deserve forgiveness.”
