Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced an “unprecedented” vaccination campaign against the coronavirus, with which he aims to immunize 25% of the population in one month.

“Over the weekend, I told the people in charge of the laboratories to deliver the vaccines to us, as our goal is to vaccinate 150,000 people per day from next week, which will be a world record,” he said. Netanyahu said in a statement. .

For this program to be possible, the Israeli state will need the American laboratories Pfizer and Moderna to deliver the 14 million doses ordered soon.

“I asked them to respond at our pace and they told me they could do it,” the prime minister said, according to the AFP news agency.

Some 150,000 daily inoculations for 30 days would total 4.5 million doses with which 2.25 million people would be vaccinated – two doses must be applied every three weeks apart – or 25% of the Israeli population, according to Netanyahu.

“Once we do, we can get out of the coronavirus in 30 days and revive the economy,” the head of government, who was the first Israeli to be vaccinated, said last Saturday.

Israel has accumulated more than 400,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 3,200 deaths from the disease since the start of the pandemic and, after a recent increase in the number of infections, the government has declared a new lockdown from tomorrow.

If the vaccination campaign announced today is successful, Israel could lift restrictions in early March, weeks before another general election is held in the country, according to Netanyahu.
