In one of his latest government measures and hours after stepping down from office, United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday evening suspended the deportation of Venezuelan immigrants for a period of 18 months, while deciding to grant temporary work permits.

In a White House statement, Trump said that “the deterioration of the situation in Venezuela justify the postponementor the expulsion of Venezuelan citizens present in the United States. “

The president always considered that his decision, which can benefit those who remain in the country on January 20 responds to “US interest in foreign policy”.

The measure has some exceptions: it will not apply to these people who have already been deported or were sentenced for a crime or two offensess.

In addition to ordering the suspension of expulsions, the president has always approved “the work permits of foreigners whose expulsion has been postponed (…) for the duration of said postponement.

Trump’s decision is a nod to the Venezuelan community in the United States, residing mainly in Florida, which supported him during these four years for his belligerence against the government of Nicolás Maduro.

In fact, this Tuesday in Washington approved new economic sanctions against Caracas, this time for the members of an alleged network whose objective was to market Venezuelan crude while evading American sanctions.

Since arriving at the White House in 2017, the Trump administration imposed numerous economic sanctions against Maduro’s executive, which he considers “illegitimate”.

The United States is one of the strongest supporters of the Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidor, to which in 2019 recognized as the rightful president of the Caribbean nation.

The Venezuelan government hopes that the new administration of Democrat Joe Biden, who assumes the American presidency tomorrow, Wednesday, to have “glimpses of decency”, comply with international law and establish “diplomatic channels of respectful dialogue”.
