Mexico set new records for more than 22,000 infections and 1,800 deaths from coronavirus, according to the latest report from the country’s health authorities, published this Thursday evening.

The Mexican government represented 22,339 infections in the 24 hours preceding the report, bringing the cumulative total to 1,711,283 since the start of the pandemic.
They were also counted 1,803 deaths during the same period, bringing the total to 146,174, a figure that places Mexico – out of 128 million inhabitants – as the fourth country with the highest number of deaths, after the United States, Brazil and India.

Nationally, the hospital occupancy rate is 61%, with the capital and neighboring state of Mexico being among the regions with the fewest beds available for patient care. The rise in infections and deaths is concentrated in densely populated areas such as the capital and its vast urban area, home to some 23 million people, which has become the epicenter of the pandemic in the Latin American country.

Vaccination plan

The Mexican government began on December 24 the vaccination of medical personnel who treat cases of coronavirus, vaccine developed by the American-German pharmaceutical duo Pfizer / BioNTech. Mexico also purchase contracts with the Sino-Canadian project CanSinoBio, for 35 million doses, and is part of the international mechanism COVAX, which allows you to purchase 51.6 million additional vaccines.

Last week, the government also announced a plans to acquire 24 million units of Russian vaccine Sputnik V, once the regulator authorizes its emergency use.
