Spanish health authorities have admitted that they are short of vaccines against the coronavirus, a situation which forces the postponement of demand for health workers and residents of nursing homes. The dramatic situation is due to delays in deliveries from pharmaceutical laboratories which have already been denounced by the European Union.
The head of public health of Catalonia, Josep Argimon, said the Northeast region will have exhausted all available vaccines for next friday, when your “refrigerators will be empty”. Argimon added that this would mean that 10,000 people who received the first injection of Pfizer vaccine will not be able to receive the required second dose 21 days later, as expected, and warns that “all of these add more uncertainty to the vaccination schedule.”
For its part the vice-president of the Community of Madrid, Ignacio Aguado, announced that the Spanish capital will stop new vaccines to use those it has in stock and ensure that those waiting for a second dose are not used up. Aguado has warned that the current vaccination rate will make it impossible to meet the national government’s goal of vaccinating 70% of Spain’s 47 million people by the summer. The country, of around 47 million inhabitants, has accumulated more than 2.6 million cases and around 57,000 deaths from coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
