After ten days of leaving power, the former President of the United States Donald trump broke off his relationship with his top lawyers for impeachment, just a week before the Senate process begins, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Butch bowers Yes Deborah Barbier, both lawyers from South Carolina, are no longer on the defense team. One of the people described the breakup as “A mutual decision” reflecting differences of opinion on the direction of the case. They both insisted on anonymity when commenting on private conversations. One said new additions to the legal team are expected to be announced within a day or two.

The last-minute changes bring further uncertainty to the preparedness and strategy of Trump’s defense team, which is preparing to be accused of inciting the Jan.6 uprising on the U.S. Capitol. Yet all but five Republican senators voted this week to drop the case before it even began, making it clear that Trump is unlikely to be convicted regardless of your defense team.

Greg harris Yes Johnny gasser, two former South Carolina secretaries of justice, have also left the team, according to one of those consulted.

According to another person with knowledge of the hires, Bowers and Barbier left the project because Trump wanted them to make a defense based on allegations of electoral fraud, something they were unwilling to do. The person was not authorized to comment publicly on the situation and requested anonymity.

Trump struggled to find lawyers willing to defend him after he became the first president in history to be arrested twice. He is due to stand trial on February 8, accused of inciting his supporters to storm Congress before the presidential inauguration, Joe biden, in an attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

After many lawyers who had defended him previously refused to take up the case, one of Trump’s closest allies in the upper house, the South Carolina senator, Lindsey GrahamBowers introduced him.

The lawyer, known in Republican legal circles, has years of experience representing elected officials and political candidates, such as the then governor of South Carolina. Mark Sanford during an impeachment trial that resulted in an ethics investigation.

Bowers and Barbier did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on Saturday night.

Republicans and Trump aides have made it clear that they intend to make a simple argument at trial: that the process is unconstitutional because it is no longer in operation.

Although Republicans in Washington appeared keen to distance themselves from Trump after the deadly Jan.6 attack, they then played down their criticism, fearing that they would anger loyal voters for the former president.
